When a lost pet is brought to a shelter, the pet will be scanned and staff will be able to obtain the pet parents’ contact information through the encoded chip. Microchips are implantable computer chips that encode a unique identification number to help reunite lost pets with their rightful parents. The microchip is placed under the pet’s skin, ensuring it will never break or fall off — e.g. a collar or ID tag.
